People have always gone out of their way to obtain what they desire in their life. Whether this obsession is out of greed or true necessity, a person will go to great lengths to achieve it. In the novel, The Taming of the Shrew, written by William Shakespeare, we find this trait present within the characters: Lucentio, Hortensio, Gremio, Petruchio, and Katherine. Each of these characters has their own motivation behind their actions in this story. Hortensio and Lucentio each wish to woo Bianca and take her as their bride. Hortensio, in an effort to secretly pursue the young woman, dons the appearance of a music teacher who goes by the name of Litio. After having shared information with Petruchio about Katherine, he†¦show more content†¦To accomplish this he marries the shrew, Katherine, in hopes of receiving a wealthy dowry from her father. Despite the numerous warnings Hortensio gives him, Petruchio casts them aside saying â€Å"thou know’st not gold’s effect † (1.2.94). Again desire prevails over necessity. Here is a man whose desire for wealth eclipses the possible chance of happiness being found within his new wife. The greed does not end there, however, Petruchio goes so far as to tame Katherine to acquire even more funds through a bet made with Hortensio and Lucentio in the end. The three men get into a minor argument, each claiming their wife to be the most obedient. To settle this dispute, Petruchio proposes â€Å"Let’s each one send unto his wife, /And he whose wife is most obedient/To come at first when he doth send for her/Shall win the wager which we will propose† (5.2.68-71). The men then settle on an amount of one hundred crowns after some negotiation. While Petruchio is quick to win the bet, as Katherine is the first to arrive, his greed has provided him even more money at the cost of abusing a woman in attempts to break her independence. Quite often, desire has the ability to blind someone from thinking logically. For Gremio, his affection for Bianca put him in this situation. George and Lennie are the two most important characters in this novel. They are migrant workers from America, and also the best of friends. Lennie on the other hand, is the taller of the two, but also the dumbest, due to his mental disability. He completely depends on George for his survival, guidance and protection. He takes possession of the sash, although reluctantly and does not mention to Lord Bercilak that he got it from his wife. This is because he accords most of his trust in material possession rather than God who can guard him from any form of harm. Mo st of his actions above are representative of his heroism save for this last act which appears to be one of his downfalls in the story. Gawain later heads for the chapel and gets the Green Knight ready for him and honing his axe. Gawain takes a bend over a blow which is immediately feinted by the Knight. This causes Gawain to flinch and he is reprimanded by the knight for that action. The knight goes for the axe again but repeats his earlier trick by feinting the blow. This infuriates Gawain who is not impressed at the playful nature that the knight employs. The knight’s third blow hits Gawain at the back of his neck. He later elaborates that the first two blows that he made are only representative of the exchanges at the court between Gawain and his wife which he rejected, and the last blow was symbolic of the failure of Gawain during the final encounter with the woman where he accepted the sash offered to him as a replacement of his faith he had in God earlier. This action according to the knight can be pardoned and lauds Gawain for indeed being exemplary and one of the most trustworthy individuals he had come across in his life. Peters mentions that the knight commented, â€Å"Gawain was polished of that dilemma and cleansed† (124). This meant that men, in spite of their liabilities and disparities can be pardoned. Gawain sees fault in himself and feels like he has lost the confidence of other people with him. However, he gets forgiveness from his peers. It is one of the greatest paintings in the high Renaissance, and it was painted in one of the greatest most extraordinarily decorated rooms in the Vatican, the name of the room was the Stanza della Segnatura. † The school of Athens† was painted by Raphael between 1508 and 1511, and it was right around the time Michelangelo was painting the 16th chapel.One of the things that makes this painting so special is that â€Å"The School of Athens† represents all the greatest mathematicians, philosophers and scientists from classical antiquity gathered together sharing their ideas and learning from each other. These figures all lived at different times, but here they are gathered together under one roof. The painting consists of generic and geometric shapes there is a good balance of both in the painting.On e of the first things that stand out to me is all the decoration that is surrounding the fresco in the painting and also the monochromatic sculptures at the base that are supporting the fresco. When you look close to the painting you can see that it was done in a one point perspective, the vanishing point and the horizon line run right through the center of the picture and sort of terminate behind the two central figures heads, and those two are Plato and Aristotle. The vanishing point almost divides the painting into two as its right in the middle of those two figures.The only place that I see a two point perspective being used in this painting is the block of stone on the floor that Michelangelo is leaning on. I also see some illusionism giving a sense of space going on as pertaining to the use of one point perspective, through the floors and the coffers and the celling. The use of simulated and actual texture and repetition in these areas also help create some of these illusions. There are different elements used, such as line, texture and repetition that helps strengthen Raphael’s painting.Overall Raphael’s use of warm colors in most areas of the painting could be looked at symbolically, such as the use of red demonstrating wisdom and power as it is used on the main figures in the painting. The colors in general are light but not too bight to keep a sense of seriousness in the painting. The warm light is focused more on the people in the back, and shadow is slightly casted upon the figures towards the front. Raphael used chiaroscuro to show underlying body structure in each of the figures and to also show and create depth and shape in the painting. he painting overall has a lot of analogous color schemes going on, with the characters, and the same analogous color scheme going on with the walls, the windows the floors and the back ground in general. But the color scheme in the characters pertaining to the background is complimentary when it co mes to certain figures. Overall this is a wonderful piece of art and Raphael did a great job over all of depicting each individual character and brings life into them in the painting.
